PEP
Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) is a medication regimen that can help prevent HIV after a possible exposure. It is an emergency option—not for regular use—and must be started within 72 hours of exposure. The sooner you start, the more effective it is.
When Should You Use PEP?
PEP may be right for you if you are HIV-negative or unsure of your status and think you may have been exposed to HIV through:
- Unprotected sex
- Sexual assault
- Sharing needles or injection equipment
- A needlestick injury at work
How Does It Work?
PEP involves taking a combination of HIV medications every day for 28 days. These medications work by stopping the virus from multiplying in your body.
Important Things to Know:
- Timing is critical – Start PEP as soon as possible, ideally within 2 hours and no later than 72 hours after exposure.
- PEP is safe and effective when taken as prescribed.
- You must complete all 28 days of medication for it to work.
- Follow-up HIV testing is needed after completing PEP to confirm you remain HIV-negative.
